Itinerary
Day 1.- The Rainbow Mountain of Peru, also known as Vinicunca, are stunning and can be seen on the spectacular Ausangate Trek. Ausangate mountain itself is considered a holy mountain (or mountain spirit). We then start off on our hike, following a lovely stream. You will be immediately surprised by literally herds of alpacas and llamas. We will have consistent views of the Ausangate Mountain. We will hike through villages and interact with the local residents. We will stop for a deluxe box lunch along the trail. Back on the trail, we encounter more of the traditional elements of this trek. This includes potato fields and unique fauna. We have the prospect of seeing chinchillas and vicunas. Vicunas are the only non-domesticated animal of the llama family in Peru. Many red mountains are also a highlight of this portion of the hike. After a total hike of approximately 5 hours, we finally reach our destination, what we came to see….the Rainbow Mountains (5,020 m / 16,466 ft). After getting over the shock of their beauty, you will have time to explore the area. You will have time to take pictures and soak in the environment. We hike downhill the way we came. The hike will take 4 to 5 hours. Our private van will be waiting for us when we return. We will embark on the 3 hour drive back to Cusco and drop you off at your Cusco hotel
Day 2: Ollantaytambo - KM 104 Chachabamba - Wiñay-Wayna - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes
We'll pick you up from your Hotel to transfer you to the train station for a 4 hour journey, or in high season this may be with private transport, to Ollantaytambo, then we'll board a Tourist Expeditions Train with reserved seats for 1 hour and 45 minutes to kilometer 104 - the start of the hike. As soon as we arrive at this point we will cross a bridge to the check out point and show your passports, then we will start with an easy walk. On the other side of the Vilcanota river the trail heads off to the right towards the ruins of Chachabamba. Then the trail leaves the forest and goes west while continuing the uphill hike in open grassland. After hiking in the sun for about three hours, the trail descends into a shaded forest. This is where trekkers can enjoy a beautiful waterfall. After leaving the waterfall and forest, we will arrive at the lower part of the incredible ruins of Wiñay-Wayna. After lunch in Wiñay-Wayna we continue through a cloud forest full of bromelias, orchids and fern trees. You will walk the last part of the original trail with amazing features including stone steps and tambos “resting places”. To arrive at Intipunku (Sun Gate) we will climb 60 Inca steps. From this point you will be able to contemplate and observe this marvelous place, where you can feel an amazing inner peace. We will have a break for photos before heading down to Aguas Calientes.
Day 3: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco
Early, after a good breakfast, we will leave to re-live the history and the mysterious world of the Incas; we take the first bus up to Machu Picchu at approx 06.15am and arrive at the ruins at 06.45am. At this time is still not so crowded, so we will take advantage of the tranquility of this sacred site with a guided tour. This enigmatic city is explored for approx. 2 hours and its mysteries and archaeological information will be explained by your expert guide (you generally have approx. 6 hours extra free time but this depends on train timetables in high season). You will have the option to climb to the Huayna Picchu mountain (Please check previously with your guide. Sometimes guided tour is after Huayna Picchu). After we'll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes for your return train.

Why Explore
WHAT MAKES EXPLORE ADVENTURES PERU BETTER THAN THE REST?
Experienced Tour Guide. We hire the best, most accomplished, experienced Explore Adventures Peru guides. Travel & Trek with someone who hiked the Inca Trail for over 900 times, Salkantay Trek for over 500 times, Ausangate Trek for over 300 times, Lares Trek for over 200 times, being at Machu Picchu for over 1000 times.
WE HAVE A 99.8% CLIENT SATISFACTION RATE! Undoubtedly, the most honest and accurate feedback comes from our clients themselves. With the goal of constantly improving our service, a post-treks survey is taken from each client in order to assess our staff, equipment and food.
BEST EQUIPMENT. We source all of our sleeping tents, dining tents and sleeping pads from north face, Equipment, an Americans and european outdoor company that has been making time-tested high altitude equipment since 1830. We don’t use locally made tents, which have a tendency to topple over in the wind or leak in the rain, like some operators.
BEST FOOD. We prepare hot meals on the mountain using fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. Trust us, the box lunches that every other company gives to their clients day in and out will sap your energy for they are dry, tasteless and comprised of empty calories.
SMALL GROUPS. In an effort to provide a more personalized service to our passengers, we in Explore Adventures Peru have a policy that our groups will not exceed 8 people (min 2 – max 8 / average 5). This fact alone sets us apart from other companies that operate departures with bigger groups.
